Congress Hits New Low: Only 7% Have Confidence In The Institution
(Catalina Camia) Americans have confidence in the military, small business and the police.
Congress? Not so much, a new Gallup Poll says.
A record-low 7% of Americans say they have “a great deal” and “quite a lot” of confidence in Congress — the lowest-rated institution among the 17 entities tested in Gallup’s confidence survey.
Congress? Not so much, a new Gallup Poll says.
A record-low 7% of Americans say they have “a great deal” and “quite a lot” of confidence in Congress — the lowest-rated institution among the 17 entities tested in Gallup’s confidence survey.
Public schools, banks, newspapers and television news all rate higher than the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.
The military is at the top end of the scale, with 74% of Americans
saying they have faith in that institution, followed by small business
(62%) and the police (53%).
No other institution in business, government
or society that was tested garnered at least a majority in the poll.
In some ways, it’s not surprising that there’s very little trust in
Congress given the institution’s low job-approval ratings in recent
years.
There’s also the fact that just 8% of Americans believe Congress
is honest and ethical.
Among the three branches of government, Congress is the biggest
loser.
Three in 10 Americans say they have a “great deal” and “quite a
lot” of confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court, according to the Gallup
Poll, while 29% say the same about the presidency.
Gallup first started asking the confidence question in 1973 about the
institutions that Americans regularly read about or interact with in
business, government and society.
Typically the church has been rated
highly, but confidence in the military has been No. 1 in the Gallup Poll
in all but one year since 1989.
